About the Presenter

Dr. Jazlynn Paige is the founder of Paige Psychological Consulting and is a nationally certified licensed School Psychologist as well as a special education consultant for families, schools and organizations. She worked as a full-time school psychologist for 6 years before starting her own business in 2019. Jazlynn excelled in many positions including: School Psychologist, Homeless Liaison, Social Emotional Learning Coordinator, 504 Coordinator, Paraprofessional Supervisor and Special Education Coordinator. Jazlynn has served on the MN Department of Education Special Education Advisory Panel and currently serves on the MN School Psychologists Association board. One of her specialties’ is youth and family homelessness as her dissertation focused on the intersection of academic success and homelessness with school-age children. Jazlynn loves building relationships with children and their families; she believes it is a prerequisite to the success of children during their academic journey.

About the Presenter

Marc Markell is professor emeritus at St. Cloud State University in the Department of Special Education. He also teaches at Worsham College of Mortuary Science. In addition, Marc has volunteered with hospice for many years in bereavement. He teaches an online class for a university in Korea. He also teaches Our Whole Lives for K-1st and 4-5th graders and Death Education to 2nd and 3rd graders and 6th and 7th graders at Mayflower United Church of Christ.

Marc earned his PhD from University of Minnesota and Educational Psychology. He is a certified Professional Development Specialist through the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. He is a Certified Thanatologist through the Association of Death Educators and counseling and Certified in Death and Grief Studies from Colorado State University through the Center for Loss and Life Transition. He has presented locally, nationally, and internationally. Marc has earned certifications from national funeral service professional organizations.


Culturally-Responsive Mental Health Services for the Hmong Population

This presentation will start with an experiential reflection into what culturally-responsive mental health services might look like. It will further address specific elements of Hmong mental health through a holistic lens, highlighting how this impacts Hmong children and teenagers. Difficult mental health topics, such as physical and sexual abuse, will be discussed. Practical tips for working with Hmong families will be provided.

About the Presenter

Dr. Alyssa Kaying Vang PsyD, LP, BC-TMH is considered a leader in the field of Hmong mental health.  She holds a Masters and a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology. She currently is CEO and President of Vanguard Mental Health and Wellness Clinic, where she leads a team of bilingual mental health clinicians in providing culturally-responsive and linguistically-competent mental health services.  Dr. Vang has been treating individuals with a broad range of mental health disorders across the lifespan for over twenty years.  She has years of experience working with children and immigrant/refugee populations.  Dr. Vang is passionate about providing exemplary training programs focused on culturally-competent and clinically-grounded principles. She is often sought nationally as a consultant and a trainer on culturally-responsive, trauma-informed, and developmentally-appropriate practices.  Dr. Vang has been featured in the American Psychological Association’s journal, Monitor on Psychology.  She co-authored the chapter “Neuropsychology of Hmong-Americans” in the book, “The Neuropsychology of Asian-Americans.”

About the Presenter

Mr. Jon Halpern is a counselor for The Blake School, an independent school in Minneapolis, MN. In addition, he has served as an adjunct faculty member for Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. Jon has spent 15 years as a classroom teacher in both public and private settings. For more than 25 years Jon has supported teachers and parents working on issues of managing children’s behavior, including time spent as a psychometrist and chemical health instructor.

Mr. Jeff Fink is a former faculty member in the school of education at Hamline University. Jeff was a public school teacher in St. Paul, MN for over 30 years. He served as a regular and special education teacher and is currently a behavioral consultant. He has been helping teachers with classroom management and parents with issues of discipline for more than 25 years. Fink is also the author of “Breaking the Cycle of Disruptive Behavior,” published in 2021.


Supporting Indigenous Children and Families: Understanding Risk and Resilience in Cultural, Community and Historical Context and Implications for Practice

This workshop will provide a broad overview of the Indigenous population in the U.S. with a focus on the historical, cultural and community factors that shape young children’s development. The workshop will help participants develop a deeper understanding of the risks to development that derive from historical and structural inequalities prevalent in many tribal communities as well as the sources of resilience that derive from the rich cultural beliefs, practices and extended family relationships that are also prevalent. This workshop is intended for participants with a range of experience working with Indigenous children and families, including participants who may have had little experience to date. Suggestions for practices that support Indigenous children and families will be shared, along with opportunities for discussion.

About the Presenter

Susan is an Anishinaabe citizen of the Red Lake Nation and has been working with tribal communities over 14 years in a variety of capacities including project development, training, and facilitation. She previously served as the Director of Tribal Projects at Minnesota Communities Caring for Children (MCCC) where she developed and implemented the Tribal N.E.A.R. Sciences and Community Wisdom Project, and most recently worked for the University of Minnesota Extension as an Extension Educator, providing resources and support to tribal nations and communities around the state on topics including trauma and toxic stress, ACEs, epigenetics neuroscience, resilience and healing. She is currently an independent consultant working with Indigenous communities and organizations to support healing and wellbeing. Susan is pursuing her PhD in Social and Administrative Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota-College of Pharmacy and received her Master’s in Public Policy degree from the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey Institute. Susan was a 2016 Bush Leadership Fellow focused on understanding and generating healing and wellbeing at the individual and collective levels. She is a mother of 4 and resides with her family in central Minnesota.

Fidgety Fairy Tales in the Classroom: A Guide to Staging Your Own Show for Educators

Learn how to use a Fidgety Fairy Tales’ script package to stage your own version of “The Three Little Pigs – A Story about Anxiety” with your students, no matter your level of theatrical expertise. 

During the first part of this session, Dr. Jazlynn Paige will present about anxiety. This lecture will focus on the different types of anxiety, its causes, warning signs, symptoms, treatment and implications for practice for educators in school settings. Participants will then get up on their feet for experiential learning with playwright/director Matt Jenson and composer/music director Marya Hart. We’ll cover basic theatre concepts, strategies for simple staging, how to work with the script package’s music tracks and low stress ideas for costumes, sets and props. 

After lunch, Fidgety Fairy Tales’ youth cast will perform their current touring show which includes three stories about anxiety, trauma and depression. 

Included with registration is access to the script package of The Three Little Pigs and a light lunch will be provided (a $99 value). Save your seat! We are accepting 25 educators for this in-person event.

About the Presenters

Matt Jenson (they/them) is MACMH’s  Director of Arts and Youth Engagement at MACMH and the Writer/Director/Choreographer of Fidgety Fairy Tales. Matt was a Master Teaching Artist at the Children’s Theatre Company (2000-2019) and a faculty member of the University of Minnesota Department of Theatre Arts and Dance (2000-2014).  His dance/theatre work has been supported by the McKnight Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council and the Jerome Foundation.

Marya Hart (she/her) is the Composer/Lyricist and Music Director of Fidgety Fairy Tales.   After many years in blues, jazz and western swing bands and extensive work as a theatre music director and pianist, she began serious composition in 2005 and has since created eight major music theatre pieces in addition to incidental music, religious and secular songs, and a continuous stream of music for students at Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis, where she was a teaching artist for over 20 years.

Breathe Well, Stress Less

The breath. It is the first and last thing we use in this world, and it never leaves our side. 

It’s also either hurting or helping us at all times. In our fast-paced world, many people are over-breathing, mouth breathing, breathing too fast and sometimes flat out just breathing wrong. Research is evident on the importance of breath and its impact on physiology and biochemistry. Yet the breath is so often overlooked when it comes to our health.  

We breathe over 20,000 times a day, but most of us breathe in a way that increases stress and anxiety. Our nervous system hasn’t caught up to the modern world and is working overtime to protect us. The ability to influence your nervous system response is the root of breathwork. This presentation will first show you how to use the breath to modulate the nervous system, boost self-regulation and resilience, and then teach it to children. 

Breathing is an evidence-based, natural, cost-effective and drug-free alternative to modifying mood and emotional state — the only proven real-time tool to shift from stress to calm in minutes. The breathing and stress connection is why we need to start paying attention to HOW we breathe. We breathe automatically, but we also can breathe on purpose to reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus, enhance sleep quality and boost immunity.

Stephanie Esser, MA.Ed., owner at Balancing Elephants, breathing coach, and creator of the BE Buddy®, a mindful tool to help kids breathe well to BE well.  

She is a certified functional breathing coach, providing evidence-based tools and methodologies to support students’ social and emotional learning and to enhance physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing through breathwork and relaxation techniques. 

Breathwork is a proactive approach to mental health; with practice, kids will have this resource wherever they go. This lifelong modern-day skill will help kids manage stress, improve focus, boost performance and feel connected to themselves and others. 

If you want to change your thoughts, learn how to regulate your nervous system through breathwork. This is the lowest hanging fruit for self-regulation and is a skill that can be taught and practiced.

Stephanie follows a trauma-informed approach to teaching breathwork to parents, teachers, therapists, and children, both in-person & remotely (individual or group). Her approach is casual and fun and focuses on functional breathing biomechanics, biochemistry, and the psychological influences of breathing habits.

About the Presenter

Kamyala Howard (she, her, hers), MSW, LCSW, is the founder of WE’RE DIVINE professional development and consulting.

Ms. Howard is a licensed mental health practitioner certified in a range of evidence-based practices and training methodologies. She received her graduate degree from the University of Minnesota with special emphasis on cultural studies, community relations, leadership development and direct clinical behavioral health.

 Ms. Howard has over 15+ years of leadership experience developing innovative strategies that challenge individuals to lean into the unknown areas of discussion and content that are often avoided, to cultivate transformation and growth.

The following boards do not require pre-approved CEHs. CEHs should be approved upon independent submission to your board:

Professionals in other related disciplines, as well as those working outside of Minnesota, can submit CEH certificates to their corresponding boards for independent approval.

A certificate of attendance will be provided to all registered training attendees. Boards may request attendance records at any time. We will track who watched the recording as a live webinar and also for those who watch the recording within 30 days of the live webinar event.
