Loneliness is an Epidemic
April 19, 2024 | In The News

Last year, the United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released a report declaring loneliness an epidemic.
The report included staggering statistics on how loneliness affects our mental and physical health. And in our own research, we found that today’s youth are searching for more support in addressing mental health struggles as compared to older Americans. Twenty-five percent of Gen Z reported needing support navigating these issues, a 14-point increase as compared to Millennials – indicating that loneliness and its long-term effects are on the rise.
Mentoring is a part of the solution to combatting this loneliness epidemic and building a healthier society. Quality mentoring relationships play a key role in ensuring that young people feel supported and knowing they aren’t alone.
We know that mentors need additional support to better serve their communities. That’s why MENTOR offers a variety of resources to help mentors continue to improve and find new pathways to connect with youth.
By becoming the best mentor you can be, you’ll become part of a national community working to support young people.
